THIS POST WAS UPDATED AUGUST8, 2024 AND WAS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN ON AUGUST 1, 2015.

Today I’m sharing with you an OLD recipe from the blog that I’m revamping a bit with an updated recipe (took the honey out of the recipe because it wasn’t really necessary), updating the photos, AND adding a video for how to make it!

The heat index in Nashville this week is getting up above 100 degrees and for my 2 long haired pups, that’s just a bit too hot! I mean, for everyone that is a bit too hot but I imagine wearing a winter coat in the summer is not exactly fun. As a result, they don’t spend too much time outside during the worst of the heat.

3 Ingredient Dog Ice Cream: a frosty paws copy cat recipe

Before making these, I suggest that you do a little bit of research to make sure that you are comfortable with your dogs consuming each of these 3 ingredients or maybe if there’s a special kind of yogurt you prefer. You should also make sure to check that the ingredients don’t contain anything that your particular pet might have any allergy to.

I’m happy with my dogs having all of these ingredients (just a little every once in a while) but everyone is different and has varying opinions on the matter. Okay? Let’s do this.

Why you’ll love this recipe:

  • It’s a dog-friendly ice cream made with simple and thoughtful ingredients
  • It only takes about 5 minutes to throw together!
  • It’s a refreshing frozen treat that your furry friends will absolutely LOVE!
  • It has no added sugar, sweeteners, or weird ingredients like many of the store bought versions.
  • It can be easily stored in the freezer for quick treats!

Ingredients:

  • Plain Yogurt of choice – I most often use plain Greek yogurt but which yogurt you prefer will work well!
  • Ripe banana – I most often make this with banana BUT you can easily swap this out for pure pumpkin puree (I usually use canned pumpkin) or even mashed sweet potato!
  • Peanut butter – because I’ve never met a pooch that didn’t love peanut butter! You’ll just want to check the ingredients and make sure that it doesn’t have an xylitol in it as that is toxic for dogs.
  • Optional add ins: you can easily add any doggy safe foods to this ice cream! I’ve added crumbled up dog treats to the top as well as blueberries and strawberry!

How to Make Dog Ice Cream:

This is ridiculously easy! Add all three of the ingredients (banana, yogurt, and peanut butter) to a blender and blend until creamy. You can also do this in a big bowl with a hand mixer or simply by hand if you’re ready to put a little muscle into it.

The mixture is then poured into whatever mold you have on hand. I used THIS paw print mold from Amazon BUT I’ve also done this using ice cube trays and mini Tupperware containers. They all work great and I promise your dogs won’t care either way. I’ll link a few other options at the bottom of the post too!

PLEASE please let me know if you make this ice cream for dogs AND massive bonus points if you send me a pic on Instagram of your dog eating their dessert ??

Notes

Please make sure that your peanut butter does NOT have xylitol in it! It’s an artificial sweetener that is sometimes added to peanut butter and it is toxic to dogs. Most natural peanut butters do not have it but just check the ingredient list!

My dog loves these! I put them into silicone cupcake liners and we hold them while she licks them clean. Thank you!

    Irene,
There are several nut butters you might try like sunflower seed and almond. Maybe some blueberries or a couple of tablespoons of pure pumpkin for flavor.
I have never seen peanut butter with xylitol-usually it is in sugar-free gum, baked goods and diet foods. It is very toxic to dogs-if anyone’s dog ingests xylitol they should contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435 open 24/7/365) and their vet. There is a $75 fee but it is good for you and your vet to call multiple times on the same case. Some pet insurance covers the fee. They have lots of free information on their website, a mobile app, podcast and free online seminars. I am a vet tech and I know this organization has helped save many animals!

Interested in healthy organic snacks, treats and food recipes. Just made the banana, yogurt, peanut butter ice cream treats. In the freezer as I write. Hot , muggy weather calls for “safe” ice cream and new healthy recipes. Thank you kindly.

Sooo great to be able to make these at home, and with simple ingredients my dog loves! I added a few blueberries instead for urinary tract health. Easy on the pockets and will be great for my grandkids when I get molds. Thank you for sharing.

What could I substitute for the banana?  Do I have to use yogurt?  I’m not sure my dog likes it or not.
    Thanks
